Why is snoring potentially harmful?

Loud frequent snoring is an early sign of and hallmark of sleep apnea - a chronic condition which causes pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. When sleep apnea sufferers fall asleep, they stop breathing for seconds at a time, depriving the brain of oxygen. Chronic lack of oxygen to the brain causes stress and numerous symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, irritability, depression and high blood pressure.

What causes snoring?

Snoring can be caused or made worse by obesity, a large tongue and tonsils, the aging process and head and neck shape. Alcohol and smoking are also likely to worsen snoring.
